Smith+Nephew, a leading medical technology company, declared its partnership with Standard Health (www.standardhealth.co.uk). This partnership contributes to the development of the orthopedic ambulatory surgery center located in the UK, based in Poole, Dorset. It’s a new center that will provide private patient and NHS access for replacement technology and joint repair for various conditions like ACL reconstruction, rotator cuff repair, foot/ankle/hand/wrist procedure, and knee and hip replacement.
The Standard Health, a clinical healthcare provider, is known for its operations and site development of the facilities, along with Smith+Nephew, enabling its medical technologies and innovative portfolio. Standard Health is planning to open 10 UK sites in the coming 3 years and 20 sites in total by 2030. This new center in Poole will look after the day and overnight stays cases that make up to vast range of orthopedic procedures. This procedure will reflect the ambulatory surgery center (ASC) model in the US. Here, Smith+Nephew is a valuable partner to orthopedic facilities and sports medicine.
The US-based ASC settings are beneficial for HCPs and their patients. The model describes the benefits, such as 92% patient satisfaction for service and care received from ASC, excellent procedural efficiency, and a low-cost, effective health system. In the US, the outpatient joint replacement is at a low cost at ASC by 40% in comparison to hospital-based surgery. Currently, there are more than 6,000 ASCs in the US that are well known for performing 50% more outpatient surgical procedures. The center in Poole might be inaugurated this year and provide excellent service to thousands of patients yearly, of which half a percent will be NHS referrals.
Around 850,000 individuals are waiting for orthopedic surgery in the UK. This rising demand results in the NHS commissioning dependent on the independent providers.
President of global orthopaedics at Smith & Nephew, Craig Gaffin, said, “The standard health orthopaedic ambulatory surgical centre model is beneficial for US patients, mainly those who were on the waiting list in the UK. The expertise, along with the ASC, and our vast portfolio, will make sure patients and facilities have access to sports medicine, wound management, medical technology, and orthopedic services to support surgeons.”
Chief operating officer for Standard Health, Matt Byrne, said, “Our company’s goal is to reshape the UK independent care provider model for orthopedics based on technologies and successful models worldwide. The initiative of the partnership with Smith+Nephew will leverage the implementation and serve the success of these surgical centres.”
