The Ujala Cygnus Group of Hospitals is initiating environmentally sustainable efforts by partnering with Karo Sambhav. This is India’s extended producer responsibility (EPR) and circular economy solutions provider. This strategic collaboration has introduced India’s first circular economy model, mainly for IT waste in Ujala Cygnus hospitals and biomedical equipment. The partnership signing ceremony was held on Wednesday at the Ujala Cygnus corporate office, ECE House, Barakhamba Road, New Delhi. This will be a transitional change in India’s healthcare sustainability market.
This initiative is encouraged to result in an annual carbon offset of over 200 tonnes of CO2, integrated into India’s ESG goals, and a contribution to the environment. Karo Sambhav is popular for initiating national-scale programs mainly on battery waste, e-waste, and plastic waste. These programs enable support to operational frameworks, regulatory compliance, and digital tools.
The valuable initiative was witnessed by leaders of both organizations, industry observers who have been a part of a first-of-its-kind initiative in Indian healthcare, along with sustainability professionals. This partnership has helped to build a strong hospital chain to entirely adopt circularity into the waste management system. To fulfill multiple objectives, such as providing people-centric healthcare while also contributing to environmental sustainability.
The chairman, director, and co-founder at Ujala Cygnus Healthcare Services, Probal Ghosal, said that the organization follows responsible healthcare to achieve targets beyond its clinical outcomes, holding social and environmental accountability. The collaboration with ‘Karo Sambhav’ has a similar belief that will support the organization to build an impactful, strong, and compliant model for hospital e-waste management.
Founder of Karo Sambhav, Pranshu Singhal, said that the healthcare sector generates complex and sensitive waste streams. The partnership with Ujala Cygnus will redesign healthcare institutions to raise awareness about managing e-waste, considering it a responsibility. This will also highlight the circular systems' smooth integration into hospital operations.
