The American leading multinational healthcare company, Abbott, in partnership with Americares India Foundation, has completed its level-up initiative of 216 primary health centres (PHCs) to health and wellness centres throughout the 12 states of India from the time the program began in 2022. The key focus is to offer quality, precision healthcare accessible to every individual at a lower cost. As a part of scalability, Abbott will grant upgradation to over 300 PHCs to health and wellness centres (HWCs) in India by 2026. It will effectively benefit above 9 million individuals throughout 12 states commented by the company. These will involve Haryana, Karnataka, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Gujarat.
The vice president of Abbott India, Ambati Venu, said, “The upgrade in primary health centers advances and improves access to reasonable healthcare infrastructure and services. It’ll also adopt a proactive health-enthusiast behavior within the region, fueling effective and early diagnosis and treatment. This is specifically critical to help identify India’s main stressors of non-communicable disease (NCDs). Elaborating on the impact, we have witnessed positive outcomes with excellence for availing health services in these upgraded centres. This initiative reflects Abbott’s goal of extending reach to quality care in India.”
The local upgradation initiative consists of management and screening for communicable and NCDs diseases. The emergency medical services involve dialysis, stretchers, medical emergency stabilization services and oxygen support, and other geriatric care services and ENT. The yoga space has also been integrated to boost a healthy lifestyle. The other key areas consist of neonatal and maternal health care, alongside contributing to adolescent and childhood health. This upgrade is essential for the development and advancement of India’s healthcare market. Abbott’s initiative will promote improvement in India’s vast healthcare sector.
The centres are quite well-equipped and content with the main required medical instruments. These involve digital spirometers, ECG machines, instruments suitable for screening, accurate refrigerator capacity, binocular microscopes, and more. The centre’s critical infrastructure provisions have been fueled with hygiene, sanitation, and water availability, allowing safe drinking water and clean, separate washrooms and hand-washing space. This promotes hygiene at its highest.
The Americares have given their 250,000 hours of training sessions by far for accredited social health activists (ASHA) and PHC health workers. From March 2025, around 5,460 ASHAs and 4,388 PHC-level health workers have received training.
