Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has revealed the Kisumu County Wellness Screening Protocol/ FAITH MATETE, promising the wellness screening to be an important part of Kisumu’s health management system. This screening will cover routine checks for diabetes, cancer and hypertension at every level. Anyang demonstrate it as ‘new philosophy’ in the healthcare sector that gives importance to early detection and prevention over treatment.

While getting into the conversation at the Launch and Mental Health Dialogue of the Kisumu Wellness Programme at the Ojolla subcounty hospital, Anyang, said, “The efforts promote a transitional step towards a resilient and healthier Kisumu. This is beyond the launch of a document, as we see it as the start of a new perspective.”

The governor addressed that the healthcare systems have been taking a reactive-waiting timeframe for too long before taking action for illness. The new protocol moves the target to early intervention and prevention. Anyang applauded the collaboration between the county’s development partners and the Department of Health that made the protocol happen and symbolising it as a bedrock of success.

Governors’ choice fuels vision of succeeding UHC

The governor acknowledged that these efforts connect well with the county’s vast vision of achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) as the programme will not just treat illness but also create key awareness and promote health via comprehensive primary care. Nyong’o claims that the county is harnessing the protocol with the required training, political will and tools to meet the precision of every step of this programme.

He added, “My government is held responsible for investing in human resources and facilities and creating the policy; also forming a permission-based surrounding and powerful collaborations.” He stressed the value of the partnership of development partners and collaboration between the private and public sectors in advancing Kisumu’s health agenda.

Nyong’o is seeking more partners to achieve a higher investment rate in the county health programmes as he feels a healthy child can learn, a healthy person can work, and a healthy mind can create excellence in the long run. Focusing on mental health, the governor put the full stop on stigma, saying, “There is no health without mental health.”

He requested the delegates under its dialogue box to challenge the existing frameworks, get involved deeply and put practical solutions at the forefront, as their recommendations will be noticed for practical and timely execution.
