Medtronic, a leading global medtech company, has expanded its VitalFlow One-System ECMO solution with the official launch in Europe. The VitalFlow extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) system, integrated in the cardiac surgery portfolio, was a winner of the CE mark in June. It focuses on filling the gap between intra-hospital transport and bedside care via a simple, fully unified portfolio. The company said that they’re planning to ramp up VitalFlow at the 39th European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EACTS) annual meeting held in Copenhagen, Denmark, from October 8-11. This expansion will lead to strong recognition and achievement for Medtronic.
The medtech giant’s senior business director for Western Europe, Giuseppe Savoja, said, “The VitalFlow ECMO system is beyond the system; it marks a big step in transitioning the way ECMO is served throughout Europe, contributing to care teams in offering help to seriously ill patients and advancing patient care. Medtronic provides a robust cardiac surgery portfolio, streamlining today. This launch reflects Medtronic’s dedication to enhancing life-storing medical technologies that identify acute cardiopulmonary needs, and it specifies our commitment to the crucial field.”
Medtronic first started marketing the VitalFlow technology in the US in September 2024. It integrated the technology via the acquisition of MC3 cardiopulmonary in March 2024. The company proudly said that the acquisition at that time represented a joint distribution agreement and a long eight-year partnership. The collaboration with the company’s cardiac surgery business turned out to be the launch of seven ECMO products over this seven years.
The VitalFlow extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) system offers temporary relief for the lungs and heart. It operates as the circulation of blood outside the patient’s body via a specialized machine. ECMO adds oxygen and eliminates carbon dioxide, successfully working on the functions of the lungs and heart. Savoja claims that the system is a seamless, portable form of factor, allowing it to shift smoothly from numerous departments within the hospital space. The VitalFlow aligns best with the existing Medtronic Nautilus ECMO oxygenator design.
The chief medical officer for cardiac surgery at Medtronic, Dr. Pieter Kappetein, said, “With the patient’s growing complexity, the needs of the clinicians in the ECMO space have also increased. This is leveraging demand for creative solutions throughout the various disease spectrum. Medtronic is well ranked and the best option to meet those needs by enhancing treatment options that best cooperate with patients.”
