OpenAI is a popular artificial intelligence research and deployment company that has brought AI to life. Its Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is a competition to the human mind, ensuring precision in the healthcare sector. This AI-inspired company was formed by tech leaders like Greg Brockman, Elon Musk and Sam Altman. Later, Elon Musk left.
Steadily, the company gained trust and recognition as it was transformed into a Public Benefit Corporation (PBC) model. Alongside the company’s OpenAI Foundation, a non-profit organisation secured valuable investors and a workforce with their respective stake and value for their contribution.
Bill Gates and OpenAI made a huge investment and promised to improve Africa’s healthcare sector. The question arises, what interests them in investing in this region? AI has definitely reached many regions, so why should Africa stay behind? It just needs a push and trust to deliver the strength to see how it could turn into an action.
AI is the power, but the way it's used and approached creates real magic and brings new ideas to the healthcare stage. Soon, Africa will also take centre stage in AI healthcare. With this the Africa’s healthcare will get the key to inventing breakthroughs and showcase its talent and dedication on point.
The initiative of Horizon 1000 is confirmed by OpenAI and the Gates Foundation to help the African leadership install AI to bolster the regional health system. Rwanda is the starting point of this initiative, where a total of US$50m in funds are locked. The funding is for technical and technology support to meet at least 1,000 major healthcare clinics' goals and, by 2028, cover the whole community as well. This AI beginning will fill the need of the workforce, which Africans have been facing for a long time.
Horizon 1000 is all about availing best in class modern technology, real-time clinical guidance and administrative support. The quality of patient care is important, as the World Helath Organization have registered millions of deaths. The healthcare champions and governments of Sub-Saharan Africa have always been dedicated towards patient care and tried to analyse how they could explore the whole AI spectrum and other digital tools.
For them, this investment is like a ray of hope to reconstruct and advance their healthcare system. Co-chair of the Gates Foundation, Bill Gates, said, “This announcement exemplifies why I stay optimistic regarding the enhancement and a change we can bring.”
