Announcement

The PacBio, a known face of quality, accurate sequencing solutions, proudly announced that its robust HiFi sequencing technology has been approached as the essential platform for the Korean pangenome reference project. The project is a native national effort boosted by the Korea National Institute of Health (KNIH), the disease control and prevention agency (DCA).

Project’s plan

The project will create the first of its telomere-to-telomere, huge-scale quality suggested genomes showing the Korean population and add the data into the worldwide human pangenome reference consortium (HPRC). By setting up a robust and inclusive reference, the efforts will catch elevation in the exploratory finding of population-centred variants. This will support improvement in insights and contribute largely to the development of accurate therapies and diagnostics.

The Korean pangenome project was declared by KNIH on 5th September 2024 as a piece of global promise to unlock the region's genetic diversity. In accordance with the 2024 pilot that hired 200 researchers and academic participants, the program is extending its reach to involve individuals from the public with the focus of sequencing over 1,000 whole genomes.

The president and chief executive officer of PacBio, Christian Henry, said, “This project highlights the new beginning in clicking on the spectacular difference in the genetic diversity of the Korean population and embedding Korean data into the international reference standards. We’re excited and equally proud of our HiFi technology and unified solutions selection in the landmark initiative. This work will deliver as a crucial foundation for evolutionary research and advancing disease, diagnostic and drug development, overall healthcare landscape and precision therapeutics and diagnostics in Korea.”

PacBio's potential to deliver excellence

The HiFi whole-genome sequencing (WGS) will serve appropriate extended readings for over 1,000 incorporated participants. The kinnex full-fledged length RNA analysis will allow accurate transcriptome profiling. Alongside, the CiFi technology designed for chromosome-scale analysis will address crucial genomic features and structural variants. This represents the first-ever national pangenome efforts to integrate PacBio’s full technology space, merging completeness, resolution and accuracy throughout RNA and DNA.

This technology designation for the project is a brilliant approach to accelerate the project's effectiveness and HiFi technology’s presence. The project will further flourish by building a strong collaboration with the pacbio and its technology. It’ like a launch of the technology, standing a chance to prove its potential with the national performance in the national project.
