On the 40th foundation day of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Union Minister Jitendra Singh launched the “SUJVIKA” portal to provide authenticated data on biotechnology product import. This platform also aims to promote biomanufacturing and evidence-based policymaking through a public-private partnership.

SUJVIKA is the trade Statistics Digital Intelligence Platform that provides structured and authenticated data on biotechnology product import.

This platform also offers:

  • Sector-wise insight into biochemical products, industrial enzymes, and other biotechnological imports.
  • It enables researcher, start-up to identify high-value and high-importance areas to assess import dependency, indigenisation, and R&D efforts.
  •  It also supports evidence-based planning and promotes public-private partnerships, which strengthen domestic manufacturing.

Dr. Jitendra Singh said that biotechnology will drive the next industrial revolution, which highlights India’s target of building a $1 trillion bio-economy by 2047 with the vision of Viksit Bharat.

The Minister referred to the BioE3 Policy approved by the Union Cabinet. Implementation is led by the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) & Biotechnology Research and Innovation Council (BRIC)to develop and enhance local capabilities and the bio-industrial ecosystem.

Infrastructure development includes the establishment of the National Bio Foundry Network, 95 bio-incubators in 21 states and union territories, and advanced research facilities that are now fuelling innovation and scaling biotech start-ups.

Advancements in pioneering areas such as space biotechnology, genome sequencing through the Genome India Project, and gene therapy trials are now expanding the scope of Indian scientific endeavours and establishing the country as a global biotech capital.

GenomeIndia Project- Under this project, sequencing data of 10,000 individuals from 99 populations has been available for the Indian Biological Data Centre.

Gene Therapy Trial - India’s first human gene therapy trial for Severe Haemophilia A achieved sustained Factor VIII production.

Space Biotechnology -DBT and Indian Space Research Organisation join hands for space biotech mission.

The launch of Sujvika marks a key milestone for India’s biotech growth. It leverages AI-enabled data intelligence to support strategic planning.
