Taiwan’s healthcare sector is crowned for its global, single-payer National Health Insurance (NHI) system. The region has successfully served robust, affordable, satisfying and accessible care to almost all the patients. The convincing technology like smart healthcare and no long wait times have grabbed the attention of many regions. Being present in the momentum and facing several challenges didn’t disturb the healthcare and economy cycle. Rather, the challenges pushed the region to test the potential and dedication with the innovations and development in the regional healthcare sector.
In 2025, the ‘Healthy Taiwan Sprout Project’ was launched and was awaiting funding confirmation. The wait is now over as the project approved the funding of NT$2.94 billion (US$93.05 million) for around 197 smart healthcare projects. This news is confirmed by President William Lai. Mr Lai further stated that he wishes to see technology and healthcare unification standing as a tall and strong ‘divine mountains’ living up to Taiwan’s international competitive spirit.
This exciting news sparked the environment of the 19th Nobel Health Care Forum in Taipei. At this event, Lai added, “This forum was begun in 2017 with the clear and focused mission to ink the nation’s healthcare policies and be involved in frontline medical services as it has become a major platform introducing Taiwan’s healthcare market.”
Lai stated that the Healthy Taiwan Promotion Committee was developed to cut down the Taiwanese complaints regarding health access and quality care, as it should not affect the nation’s average life expectancy. Furthermore, the average life expectancy rate has expanded to 80 years, but the individuals living with poor health are around 8.4 years. Around 10% of their lives are near to deadly life with no movement in the body.
Lai shed light on the initiatives, stating that, regarding all the concerns and the funding for this project, the government has confirmed the goal to train 500,000 AI professionals by 2040. Alongside, the new National Center for meeting peak performance Computing level has started with its process, whereas the National AI Data Center is near inauguration.
These efforts will establish three crucial technologies, such as quantum computing, robotics and silicon photonics. The government intends to attend to and navigate most of the small and medium-sized enterprises of Taiwan by equipping AI in their procedure. This will improve the competence level of the enterprises.
