Hypershell Halo: An Exoskeleton to Save Patients' Knees as Well as Fatigue

Hypershell has announced a novel kind of body-movement-assisting exoskeleton called Hypershell Halo, which will be showcased at the IFA tech show next week.

The significant transformation in this generation is that force is applied by the knee joint and the hip, for more complete support for the body's walking motion. It should help save your knees and reduce overall fatigue on hikes and walks, and shows the biggest shift in the Hypershell exoskeleton intended since its first reveal in 2023.

Hypershell Halo does this with what the company calls its Hypershell Unified Architecture, dubbed "an industry-first architecture that integrates hip and knee assistance into one continuous system built around the complete lower-body kinetic chain," by its maker.

The difference is clear in the product images Hypershell has revealed ahead of Halo's full unveil next week.

Hypershell Halo Vs Hypershell X Ultra

In Hypershell X Ultra, there's a round motor enclosure on each side of the hip. In the Hypershell Halo, these are joined by supplementary powered elements near the knee joint.

This introduces another point of interface with the body. These sit around the waist as before, and there are straps that help hold the Hypershell Halo in place both above and potentially below the knee. It runs near the full length of the wearer's leg.

The concept is to create Hypershell's exoskeleton "a much more comprehensive support system," compared to recent models.

Such a design re-raises all the challenges I was concerned about when first seeing one of these exoskeletons, and more like: is there a significant risk of the joint being pushed in unintended directions? And how natural is walking going to feel in one of these things?

To preserve a relative sense of freedom of drive, the Halo uses a "patented Fish-Spine Adaptive Joint" according to Hypershell.

"For a multi-joint exoskeleton, this creates a delicate balance: too much rigidity can restrict natural movement, while too much freedom can compromise stability and force transmission," it says.

This service was landed upon after a more modular intended design was rejected for causing too many potential challenges with wear, noise, reliability, and comfort.

Hypershell's last few releases have worked on improving weight, power, torque, and effectiveness, which is significant but not essentially hugely interesting. The Hypershell Halo marks the first major shift in the organization's intent since it became familiar with these exoskeletons.

According to Towards Healthcare, the Exoskeleton Market is projected to grow significantly, with estimates indicating the market size will increase from USD 681.53 million in 2026 to approximately USD 2308.97 million by 2035, expanding at a CAGR of 14.52% from 2026 to 2035. Exoskeleton has the major benefits in their role in medical care. They assist patients recovering from injuries or living with mobility complexities. Applications include medical exoskeletons to regain movement in their legs or arms. These tools offer guided motion, supporting muscles to rebuild strength. They provide hope to patients with spinal cord injuries, allowing them to stand or walk again. Use therapeutic exoskeletons to regain mobility in their legs or arms. A recent report by Towards Healthcare highlights that the exoskeleton market is growing, as exoskeletons provide significant advantages in terms of lowering work-related injuries, enhancing physical well-being, and improving overall work performance. These tools have the strength to enhance nurses' capability to offer safe and high-quality patient care, causing to enhanced patient results and satisfaction. Exoskeletons should be designed to integrate seamlessly with personal protective equipment (PPE) used by nurses, like gloves and gowns. Exoskeletons need to be adaptable to the various range of nursing specialties and tasks to exploit their usability and efficiency. The application of exoskeletons has the potential to positively impact nurses' work life by lowering work-associated injuries, enhancing physical health, improving job satisfaction, and promoting psychological and psychosocial well-being.
